Q. What about passports?
A. Proof of citizenship in the form of a passport and a return plane ticket are required to enter the Cayman Islands.
Q. What's the best way to get to Cayman Brac?
A. Cayman Airways flies from Boston, Chicago, Houston, ,Miami, Orlando and Tampa. The only direct flight via Cayman Airways from the U.S. to Cayman Brac is from Miami, although that is only on Saturdays and is later in the day. Check their website as the schedule tends to change fairly regularly (www.caymanairways.com). You can also fly to Grand Cayman via USAirways, American, Delta, Spirit Airline and Continental. After arriving in Grand you would then take the Cayman Airways Express flight from Grand Cayman to Cayman Brac. There are several afternoon and evening flights to Cayman Brac, and also two or three morning flights departing Cayman Brac to Grand Cayman for your connecting flight home.
Q. What about alcohol into the Cayman Islands?
A. Each guest is allowed to bring 32 ounces of liquor or one liter of wine, duty-free, into the Cayman Islands. There are a few well-stocked spirit stores on the Brac.
Q. Do we have to exchange US for CI currency?
A. Absolutely not. Every store and restaurant will welcome your US dollar. Most places give an exchange rate of $.80 CI for each US Dollar. If you bring travelers checks, you can exchange at Cayman National Bank at the rate of $.82 per US Dollar. Banking hours are 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with extended evening hours on Friday. As of this writing, CNB has added Saturday hours as well.
Q. How do we get from the airport to Tradewinds and Breezy?
A. Our caretaker, Barry Morgan, will meet you at the airport and transport you to the property. He is really a wonderful help to us and a very trusting and kind man. We supply his cell phone number in our booking package that we send out once we receive a deposit. Any problems or questions you have while on the Brac, he's the one to call!
Q. Who do we contact for diving adventures?
A. Our recommendation for the best dive operation is Brac Reef Divers which is about 1 mile from the property. They have several boats and run a very clean and safe operation. Their phone number and web address are contained in our booking package. We also provide a list of dive sites for both scuba and snorkeling. You can also book your own private boat for snorkeling, scuba, fishing or a trip to Little Cayman. Barry will know the latest on what charters are available.
Q. Is there a sandy beach?
A. Yes, you have your own private sandy beach right out front !!! As you can see from the pictures, the beach is protected by a reef as the waves break couple hundred feet from the beach. The lagoon starts out shallow then gets deeper the further you snorkel out, to about 20' deep. There is also coral behind the reef. This provides excellent access for swimming and snorkeling, and is especially wonderful to have if you have small children. You can spend many hours just wandering up and down the lagoon, finding many different species of fish, shells and artifacts. We've seen stingray, bonefish, jacks, turtles, octopus, lobster, etc., etc. The lagoon area in front of our property is also a marine conservation zone (no taking the lobsters!).
Q. What about rental cars?
A. Brac Rent-A-Car is our recommendation for rental cars. They are located right at the airport and very convenient for pick-up and drop-off of your vehicle. If you are looking to rent a few days into your trip, give them a call and they will accommodate you. They offer discounts to our guests so make certain that you tell them you are staying at Tradewinds or Breezy. The contact information is in the booking package.
Q. Are there restaurants nearby?
A. Yes! Within walking distance there is Captain's Table, which gets our highest recommendation. They have wonderful lunches outside and either casual or finer dinner dining in air-conditioned comfort in the evenings. Fun tiki bar for cocktails also. Aunt Sha's Kitchen is just a hop and skip away, they serve up local fare and are also a must-do while on Brac. Brac Reef Resort has a a tiki bar with good menu, and they also have a buffett that is available for all three meals. Biggy's Restaurant is a newer establishment that we haven't had the occasion to try just yet but have heard good reviews. All restaurants also do take-out if you would prefer dining in the comforts of "home". One meal you can't miss on the Brac is Barry's (our caretaker) jerked chicken. He sets up his stand next to Ed's Place (around the corner from the grocery store) each Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night.
Q. What about fishing or snorkeling trips?
A. Check with Barry when you get to the Brac. He will provide you with the contact information of a local captain that we take you out. The cost is fairly reasonable and a great trip in the right weather.
Q. Where can you snorkel?
A. Just out your front door in the reef-protected lagoon. There are also other places around the island that you can drive or bike to and just jump in the water. The north side of the island has a few spots, by the old Bucaneer (Robert Foster Road) Hotel or out by the Government building are just two to mention. Again, a list of the snorkeling spots, with directions, is provided in our booking package.
Q. Internet access and International telephone calls?
A. The West End Post Office has a public access computer for internet (costs CI$6.00 per hour), about one mile from the house. For International calling you can buy phone cards from Cable & Wireless, call collect or third party billing. You can make local calls from Tradewinds and Breezy and you can receive calls from the US. The local telephone numbers are in the booking package.
